16: Town Hall #2 -Faith, Race, Education

This is the second in the series: Are We Not One? Conversations on faith, race, and reconciliation. The impacts of the coronavirus pandemic helped to expose some of the disparities that people of color and black people still face in this part of the twenty-first century. Disparities in education persist: access; affordability; college preparedness; vocational training; low expectations; inadequate pay for teachers; poorly equipped schools, school to prison pipeline, and the list goes on.
Hillside Church in Kent, WA hosts these town halls to create opportunities for dialogue and free discussion in the hopes that we become better equipped to have these difficult conversations and to activate us all to become a part of the solution to the complex problems facing us in our modern, yet to be an equal society.

Despite earning a Ph.D., and becoming a psychologist, pastor, and businessman none of these accomplishments has shielded Dr. Sims from the realities of being a black male in the United States of America even among people of faith. In part 1 we hear his story from being raised in Detroit, MI to being a college football player, and becoming a pastor of a multicultural church in Federal Way. WA, and the beginnings of his work in applying the principles of courageous conversations on faith and race.

5: Interview with Dr. Andre Sims, Pt. 2

Dr. Sims discusses the system of Courageous Conversations to help address issues of faith and race. He gives examples of his work and his encounters in these areas including his work with faith leaders. He gives reasons for why we must continue this work in the community, especially in faith communities.
